White House: Resolution to Increase Pressure

The White House has welcomed a new set of sanctions the UN Security Council adopted on North Korea following its fifth nuclear test, saying it will apply substantial pressure on the North.

In a regular media briefing on Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest particularly assessed a coal export cap, saying the North has been using a substantial portion of revenue from coal exports to fund its nuclear program.

He said the restriction on its coal exports “certainly ratchets up pressure on the North Korean government in a way that they have not experienced before,” predicting that the international pressure on the North Korean regime will continue to increase.

Earnest also said the new set of sanctions will lead the North Korean government to evaluate the strategy it has pursued so far.

The 15 UNSC members unanimously adopted Resolution 2321 on Wednesday, effectuating a new round of sanctions on the North to punish its fifth nuclear test on September Ninth.
