US Emphasizes Strong Ties Regardless of Park's Fate

Washington has emphasized that its alliance with Seoul will remain robust regardless of President Park Geun-hye’s political fate.

The U.S. State Department’s Press Office Director Elizabeth Trudeau delivered Washington’s position in a press briefing on Thursday, answering a question on how Friday’s parliamentary vote to impeach President Park will affect the South Korea-U.S. relationship.

Trudeau said that the impeachment is an internal matter for South Koreans, referring the question to the South Korean government. But, she said that the alliance between South Korea and the U.S. is “strong,” “deep,” and “solid” and that relations will not be impacted.

Asked whether it will affect discussions on North Korea or a trilateral meeting of top nuclear envoys of Seoul, Washington and Tokyo slated for next week, the spokeswoman said the U.S.’ position on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is well-known and has not changed.
