RFA: N. Korea Set Preconditions for Recovering Remains of US Soldiers

North Korea reportedly set preconditions for the resumption of work to recover the remains of American soldiers from the Korean War.

This is according to Radio Free Asia(RFA), which made public a report issued earlier this month by the Coalition of Families of Korean & Cold War POW/MIAs on its operations of this year's second half.

The Washington-based international broadcaster quoted the coalition's president Rick Downes as saying that the North had set preconditions when a private delegation visited Pyongyang back in late September.

The North's delegation led by Vice Foreign Minister Han Sung-ryul reportedly made demands after it initially refused the resumption of work to recover the remains.

Although the report did not go into detail, the demands were said to be "reasonable" and did not involve money.

Under a bilateral agreement, the U.S. had resumed excavation work in 2011. But it was suspended the following year when North Korea pushed ahead with the firing of a long-range rocket.
