U.S. lawmakers have warned the Donald Trump administration that it will face incremental nuclear threats from North Korea.
House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce and the ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee Adam Schiff sounded the alarms during a forum hosted by the Wall Street Journal in Washington D.C. on Tuesday.
Schiff said unless the North changes its behavior, the regime will be able to make nuclear warheads small enough to be mounted on intercontinental ballistic missiles during Trump’s presidential term.
He also stressed the need for China to play a key role in drawing behavioral changes from the North.
Royce said the Trump administration should put pressure on China so that it could persuade the North to give up its nuclear programs.
Royce also called on Washington to do its part to bring about change from the North through secondary sanctions on companies in third countries doing business with the North as well as sanctions on U.S. financial institutions.
