U.S. President Donald Trump has highly assessed Chinese President Xi Jinping, saying Xi is actively working to resolve the North Korean nuclear issue.
In an interview with Fox News aired on Tuesday, Trump denied that he has softened his stance on China.
However, Trump said he is dealing with China “with great respect,” questioning the efficiency of waging a trade war with China at a time when China is trying to help resolve the North Korean issue.
Trump acknowledged that Xi may not be able to help the U.S. with Pyongyang but he said trying to help and being unable to help are different, adding he will see what China can do.
Regarding the question on military options against North Korea, Trump maintained his strategic ambiguity, saying he will not “telegraph” what he is doing or thinking.
Trump said he wants peace with the North, but criticized his predecessors’ dealing with Pyongyang, saying their talks-oriented policies with the North have failed to prevent the regime from developing nuclear weapons.
