Gov't Dismisses Japan's Protest of Survey Around Dokdo

The South Korean government has dismissed Japan's protest against a maritime survey conducted near the Dokdo islets in the East Sea.

In a briefing Thursday, Foreign Ministry spokesman Cho June-hyuck said Tokyo filed a formal complaint and stressed that Seoul will sternly respond to any unjustified claims concerning Korea's indigenous territory of Dokdo.

Japan's Jiji Press reported earlier in the day that South Korean authorities conducted a maritime survey near the islets on January fourth and the Japanese Foreign Ministry protested the move.

Korean research vessels carried out ocean surveys near Dokdo in April and June last year to which Japan also issued protests.
