Foreign Column: Moon is Not Anti-American

At least one respected American publication argues President Moon Jae-in may seek more independence within the U.S. alliance but that "he’s not anti-American."

Washington-based magazine The Diplomat published a column Wednesday, highlighting North Korea policies and Seoul-Washington relations under the new administration.

The column argues Moon does bring a different policy temperament on the North Korea issue and is likely to look at the problem through a different lens. Still, it said Moon cannot fairly be described as “anti-American," citing his interview with the Washington Post just days before the election.

Moon told the Post the alliance between South Korea and the U.S. is the most important foundation for Korea's diplomacy and national security. He added that “South Korea was able to build its national security thanks to the U.S.”

The Diplomat said that Moon doesn’t seem to be entering office "with the intent of rocking the boat" and suggested the U.S. return the favor by demonstrating it can be a valuable partner for South Korea.
