Chinese Daily Urges Beijing to Keep Up Opposition to THAAD

A Chinese newspaper says Beijing should keep up its opposition to the U.S.-built THAAD antimissile system even as it strengthens communication with South Korea under its new president.

In an opinion piece, the Global Times wrote South Korea’s new ruling Democratic Party is pushing for a hearing on the missile battery, which was made operational in South Korea last week.

The Times noted that newly elected President Moon Jae-in said multiple times during his campaign that THAAD deployment should be put to a vote in parliament.

This, the Times said, indicates that deployment is "not absolutely final and uncertainties remain."

The editorial also said the U.S. is the real power behind the deployment.

The Times wrote China should demonstrate its resolute opposition to THAAD, but its tactics must correspond with South Korean politics. It said China should show that it is not belittling South Korea or indifferent to bilateral relations.

Beijing strongly opposes the deployment of THAAD in South Korea. China fears the U.S. could use the system’s powerful radar to spy on its territory.
