White House: Trump Looks Forward to Talks with Moon over N. Korea

The White House said U.S. President Donald Trump anticipates talks with South Korean President Moon Jae-in on how to deal with North Korea’s nuclear and missile threats.

White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer made the remark during a regular media briefing on Monday, when he was asked whether Washington advises against the new South Korean government reaching out to Pyongyang after the North’s latest missile test.

Spicer declined to comment on the question, but said instead that Trump looks forward to Talks with Moon and "discussing the way forward."

Regarding the North’s missile provocations, the press secretary called for tougher sanctions on the North, saying there is no question Pyongyang continues to threaten the U.S. and its allies, as well as its neighbors, including China and Russia.

Spicer said the U.S. is particularly urging China and Russia to “to do everything they can in terms of sanctions and to help resolve the situation and bring stability to the peninsula.”

Spicer also mentioned Russia in his statement issued after the North’s missile test on Sunday. He said the missile landed in waters closer to Russia than to Japan and Trump cannot imagine that Russia is pleased.

The North’s missile fell in waters 96 kilometers south of Vladivostok and 400 kilometers away from Japan.
