Fox News: UN WIPO Processing N. Korean Patent Application for Banned Chemical

The UN's World Intellectual Property Organization, or WIPO, is said to be processing North Korea's patent application for its method of producing sodium cyanide, a toxic chemical the UN Security Council has banned from being shipping to North Korea.

According to the U.S. media on Monday, WIPO has been preparing the patent since November 2015.

Used in making the nerve gas Tabun, the chemical has been on a list of banned shipments to North Korea since 2006.

Fox News said WIPO failed to notify the UNSC committee monitoring sanctions against North Korea or the UN Panel of Experts, which reports sanctions violations to the committee.

A UN official told Fox there is no record of communication from WIPO to the Committee or the Panel regarding “such a serious patent application,” and the Panel of Experts has now officially opened an investigation into the application.

Given that sodium cyanide is also used in the extraction of gold from ores and concentrates, the patent could violate sanctions that prevent the North from obtaining funds, other financial assets and economic resources which could be used in the mass destruction-related programs.
