S. Korea, US to Hold Summit in Late June in Washington

South Korea and the United States have agreed in principle to hold a summit in late June in Washington.

Yoon Young-chan, senior presidential secretary for public relations, told reporters Tuesday the agreement came at a meeting between Chung Eui-yong, the presidential diplomacy and security task force chief and White House official Matt Pottinger at the presidential office in Seoul.

Yoon said that detailed schedules will be discussed later, adding that the top office will ensure President Moon Jae-in and U.S. President Donald Trump have an opportunity to build personal ties at the summit.

Yoon said that the two leaders share the ultimate goal of ending North Korea's nuclear weapons using all available means, including sanctions and dialogue.

He also said both leaders believe dialogue is possible with North Korea under the right conditions and plan to seek bold and practical joint measures to make that happen.

President Moon said special envoy Hong Seok-hyun will head to the U.S. this week to begin laying the groundwork for the meeting. The president said the envoy's visit will be an occasion to demonstrate a solid South Korea-U.S. alliance to the world as well as the peoples of the two allies.
