Passenger Ship Service Linking N. Korea and Russia Launched

Russia’s Itar-Tass news agency said a passenger ship service linking North Korea and Russia has been launched.

According to the report, the North’s “Mangyongbong” carrying 40 passengers departed from Rajin Port on Wednesday night and arrived in the Port of Vladivostok on Thursday morning.

Most of the passengers were Chinese tourists or Russians returning to their homeland from the North.

Japan’s Kyodo News said that this is the first time the two countries have launched a regular passenger ship service. The ship will operate once a week.

An official of a Russian shipping company charged with operating the Mangyongbong said that Chinese tourist agencies have already devised tour packages mobilizing the passenger ship. The official said that the ship will also transport cargo, which will be mainly food products.
