'N. Korean Officials Threatened Use of Nuclear Weapons During Informal Talks in Sweden'

North Korean officials reportedly boasted the North's nuclear capabilities and hinted that Pyongyang could actually use nuclear weapons, during informal talks with U.S. officials in Sweden last month.
Sue Mi Terry, a former deputy intelligence officer for East Asia affairs at the White House National Security Council, quoted the North Korean officials during a telephone interview with the Voice of America.
The North Korean officials reportedly said that the North had to go through enormous pain and suffering and spend billions of dollars to acquire nuclear weapons and thus would use them if the country is under threat.
The officials are said to have repeated the position that the North is ready to counter any military acts by the U.S. and that economic sanctions and joint military drills between Seoul and Washington would further escalate tensions in the region.
Bruce Klingner, a Senior Research Fellow at the Heritage Foundation, who also attended the informal talks in Sweden, said that he saw no signs from the North Korean officials hinting flexibility or wishing for negotiation on their nuclear program.
The informal talks held in Sweden in late May were attended by government officials and experts from the two Koreas, the U.S., and China.
