38 North: N. Korea Expanding Nuclear, Biological, Chemical Weapons Program

A U.S. think tank says it is highly probable that North Korea is developing nuclear, biological and chemical(NBC) weapons unknown to the outside world.

"38 North" said in a report released last Wednesday that for the past 40 years, Pyongyang has consistently pursued expanding its NBC programs. The North Korea-monitoring Web site said the expansion is in line with the North's philosophy of self-reliance.

According to 38 North, available information indicates that North Korea possesses or will soon possess operational nuclear weapons and continues to develop such weapons. It added that the North possesses biological and chemical weapons programs and may have an inventory of such weapons.

The report estimated that there are 25 to 50 entities and one-thousand-500 to three-thousand personnel directly involved in various aspects of the North's biological weapons program. It assessed that there are 100 to 150 entities and nine-thousand to 15-thousand personnel involved in the nation's nuclear program.
