Trump Enraged over THAAD Controversy in S. Korea

A senior South Korean government official says U.S. President Donald Trump was enraged by the controversy surrounding the deployment of the U.S. THAAD missile defense system in South Korea.

The official told a reporter of Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency that Trump expressed anger over the delay in the installment of the antimissile system in South Korea.
The remarks came during discussions held on June eighth at the White House with State Secretary Rex Tillerson and Defense Secretary James Mattis.
The official said the situation in Washington is apparently what led the head of the National Security Office, Chung Eui-yong, to announce in a news conference on June ninth that Seoul has no plans to fundamentally change its agreement with the U.S. regarding THAAD.
In particular, Chung had said that THAAD was a decision made to protect South Korea and U.S. troops from North Korean threats, and that Seoul will not treat the matter lightly just because there has been a transition of power. He emphasized that Seoul will continue to work closely with Washington on the matter.
Concerns have emerged that if the senior government official's assessment is accurate, the controversy surrounding THAAD could become a contentious issue in the upcoming South Korea-U.S. summit set to open in Washington next week.
It is uncertain whether President Moon Jae-in and Trump will mention the THAAD issue in their joint statement set to be released after their summit.
Moon is set to embark on a five-day trip to the U.S. next Wednesday. He is scheduled to hold talks with Trump at the White House next Thursday and Friday.
