S. Korea, US, Canada to Conduct Joint Naval Exercise off Jeju

The South Korean Navy announced on Monday that it will conduct a joint exercise with the U.S. and Canada in waters off Jeju starting Friday.

Held in conjunction with a routine drill by the South Korean Navy Maritime Task Flotilla Seven, the joint exercise will run for three days and feature five South Korean warships, including the Aegis destroyer Yulgok Yii , a P-3 maritime patrol aircraft and a Lynx helicopter.

The U.S. Navy will deploy its Aegis destroyer Dewey and a MH-60R helicopter, while Canada sends its naval ships Winnipeg and Ottawa and a SH-3 helicopter to join.

Through the drill, the three countries seek to strengthen their coordination on strategic maneuvering, landing and takeoff of helicopters, antisubmarine tactics and live-fire ability, among others.

The Navies of South Korea and the U.S. will also conduct a joint simulation drill that involves detecting and pursuing enemy ballistic missiles.
