'Ramping up Pressure on North to be Key Topic at US-China Dialogue'

The U.S. State Department says ramping up pressure on North Korea will be a key topic at this week's high level talks with China.

Susan Thornton, acting assistant secretary of state for East Asian and Pacific affairs, made the remark in a conference call on Monday to preview the inaugural Diplomatic and Security Dialogue.

Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and Secretary of Defense Jim Mattis will host their Chinese counterparts in Washington on Wednesday.

Thornton said the U.S. is “trying to create a global echo chamber where all countries come together behind the UN Security Council resolutions that have been developed to address North Korea's illicit weapons programs.”

She added that the U.S. is trying to get all countries to take actions to increase the pressure on North Korea through sanctions implementation and other measures.

Positively assessing China's ban on North Korean coal imports, she said the U.S. would like to see more sanctions by China.

She said the U.S. is continuing to persuade China to use its leverage against the North as its largest trade partner.
