Japan's Defense Ministry Reportedly Seeks Record High Budget

Japan is seeking a record high defense budget citing increasing threats posed by North Korea’s nuclear and missile development.

In a budget proposal to the Japanese Ministry of Finance, the Japanese Defense Ministry called on the government to earmark more than five trillion yen, 44-point-four billion U.S. dollars, for the defense budget for the next fiscal year starting April first of 2018.

It is the fourth consecutive year the Japanese Defense Ministry sought more than five trillion yen for the following year’s defense budget.

The Nihon Keizai Shimbun on Monday presumed a record high defense budget surpassing last year’s has been requested.

Japan’s use of defense budget next year is said to be focused on countering threats from the North’s nuclear and missile programs and defending against China’s growing maritime assertiveness in the East China Sea.
