China Allows S. Korean Chartered Flight Services amid THAAD Retaliation

The Chinese government has allowed a South Korean airliner to run chartered flight services to China for the first time since China’s economic retaliation against South Korea began over the deployment of U.S. THAAD antimissile system.

According to the South Korean Embassy in Beijing and the airline industry on Monday, China’s National Aviation Corporation recently gave the green light for Jeju Air to fly temporary chartered flights from Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province to Zhangjiajie in Hunan Province twice later this month.

It marks the first time this year that Beijing has approved a South Korean airliner's request to offer chartered flight services to China.

A diplomatic source in Beijing said Zhangjiajie is a popular tourist destination for many South Korean visitors, and local tour agencies had filed numerous complaints with the Chinese government over the decease in tourists as a result of its retaliation over THAAD.

The source said the measure appears to be only aimed at reducing the losses of Chinese tour agencies, and that it is difficult to judge the move as China easing up on its economic retaliation against South Korea.
