US Issues Strong Warnings Against N. Korea

Anchor: The United States is issuing strong warnings against North Korea’s threats to attack Guam with its intermediate-range ballistic missiles. U.S. President Donald Trump mentioned a possibility of military action, while Defense Secretary Jim Mattis called on the North to cease any actions that would lead to the end of its regime.

"North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen."

After issuing the “fire and fury” warning on Tuesday, Trump touted the power of the U.S. nuclear arsenal in a tweet on Wednesday.

He wrote in the tweet that his first order as President was "to renovate and modernize the U.S.’ nuclear arsenal" and "it is now far stronger and more powerful than ever before.” He added that hopefully the U.S. will never have to use this power.

Sebastian Gorka, deputy assistant to Trump, also warned North Korea not to test the U.S., saying that nobody in the world – especially not North Korea – comes close to challenging the U.S. military capabilities, whether they’re conventional, whether they’re nuclear, whether they’re special forces.

U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis cautioned Wednesday that North Korea's actions will continue to be grossly overmatched by the U.S.', calling on the North to "cease any consideration of actions that would lead to the end of its regime and the destruction of its people."

However, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson played down Trump’s strong warnings, saying that the president was sending a strong message to North Korea to prevent the North from making a misjudgment.

"I think what the president was just reaffirming is the United States has the capability to fully defend itself from any attack and defend our allies, and we will do so. And so the American people should sleep well at night."

The U.S. media said that Trump was issuing the warnings against not only North Korea but also China.
