UN Chief Troubled by 'Confrontational Rhetoric' on N. Korea

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed concern over rising tensions between the U.S. and North Korea.

His spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters at UN headquarters on Wednesday that the "Secretary-General remains extremely concerned by the ongoing situation and is troubled by the increase in confrontational rhetoric."

U.S. President Donald Trump issued a warning to unleash "fire and fury" on Pyongyang following the North's strengthened threats after the UN Security Council adopted a new sanctions resolution on Saturday.

North Korea responded with a threat to fire intermediate-range ballistic missiles around the U.S. territory of Guam, further escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula.

Regarding the unanimously adopted new resolution, the UN spokesman reiterated that the United Nations welcome the international community's commitment on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula as well as a diplomatic and political resolution of the issue.
