US Congressmen Back Trade Deal with S. Korea

U.S. congressmen have urged the U.S. to recognize the trade imbalance with South Korea from their free trade agreement and continue to enhance their bilateral alliance through close cooperation.

U.S. House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ed Royce and Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific Ted Yoho made the call in a letter to U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday.

Royce and Yoho said that during their recent trip to Seoul, they clearly saw that President Moon Jae-in and his government place importance on economic cooperation and trade with the U.S., adding that the U.S. trade deficit with South Korea should be addressed through "ongoing engagement" with Seoul.

The congressmen also warned that ending the KORUS FTA would be beneficial for China, which wants the U.S. to reduce its engagement with South Korea.

They added that a withdrawal from the trade deal would weaken U.S. presence in East Asia and the world, boosting China's ambitions to replace the U.S. in the Asia and Pacific region.
