'N. Korea Mulling Cyber Attack on Entities in S. Korea, US, Japan'

A Japanese daily said Tuesday that North Korea could launch a cyber attack, noting the regime's warning of more provocations ahead of new UN Security Council(UNSC) sanctions.

Citing a source on North Korean affairs, the Asahi Shimbun daily said that Pyongyang is known to be considering cyber attacks targeting government agencies and private companies in South Korea, the U.S. or Japan.

In a statement Monday, the North's Foreign Ministry threatened "corresponding consequences" on the U.S. if Washington goes ahead with concocting even tougher illegal sanctions against North Korea at the UNSC.

Asahi said that Kim Jong-un ordered the military's Reconnaissance General Bureau to be prepared to launch cyber attacks against government agencies in the three countries if the UNSC adopted a new sanctions resolution.

A former North Korean cyber agent told the Japanese newspaper that the attacks would target military strongholds, administrative agencies, nuclear power plants and banks and are aimed at stealing information and disrupting computer systems.

The agent said that repetitive large volume access was the main method of attack in the past but that these days the North was focused on developing viruses.
