EU to Implement UN Resolution, Produce Own Sanctions on N. Korea

The European Union's top diplomat says that the EU will faithfully implement the new UN Security Council resolution against North Korea and produce its own sanctions to increase pressure against Pyongyang.

“Yet the international community has done the right thing a few hours ago, strengthening the pressure on North Korea while calling at the same time for a peaceful solution of the crisis through a meaningful, credible political dialogue. Strengthening economic pressure, sanctions and keeping the door of dialogue open on the other way, as I said, encouraging a meaningful, political, diplomatic solution."

The EU's foreign policy chief Federica Mogherini made the remarks on Tuesday in her report on the North's sixth nuclear test and global responses during a plenary session of the European Parliament in France.

In a rare move, the parliament addressed the North Korean nuclear issue as an official agenda item, receiving briefings from the EU's foreign policy chief and discussing possible EU responses.

Mogherini said that as it always has, the EU will immediately implement the new UN resolution, and work with other partners in the world to make sure everyone fully implements the economic sanctions.

The EU is reportedly mulling deporting North Korean workers in Europe to block the North's income source for its nuclear program.
