Mattis: Pentagon Must Maintain System for Delivering Nuclear Weapons

U.S. Defense Minister James Mattis stressed on Wednesday that the Pentagon must maintain a system for delivering nuclear weapons by Navy submarines, Air Force bombers and Air Force intercontinental ballistic missiles(ICBM).

The Washington Post said that Mattis’ remarks on the system known as the triad “came amid an ongoing review of the U.S. nuclear weapons program and as tensions with North Korea remain high as that regime works toward developing a nuclear missile of its own.”

Speaking to reporters as he flew to a nuclear base in North Dakota, Mattis said if he wants to send the most compelling message, he has been persuaded that is the triad, and its framework is the right way to go.

Mattis also said that the key to avoiding nuclear war is maintaining a nuclear arsenal sufficient to convince a potential enemy that attacking the U.S. with a nuclear weapon would be suicidal.
