Seoul Hints No Action against China at WTO Amid N. Korea Issue

The presidential office has hinted Seoul will not file a suit against Beijing at the World Trade Organization(WTO), at least for the time being, saying instead now is the time to maintain cooperation with China over North Korea’s nuclear and missile provocations.

Presidential Spokesman Park Soo-hyun relayed the top office’s position during a media briefing on Thursday.  He said the government is willing to solve “difficult matters” between South Korea and China by strengthening strategic communication and cooperation between the two nations.

His remarks are seen as an indirect dismissal of calls being tossed around among South Korean politicians and media outlets that Seoul should take Beijing's economic retaliation over the deployment of a U.S. THAAD antimissile system to the WTO.

Park explained the government regards cooperation with the international community, including China, as being important and current efforts should focus on solutions to the nuclear issue.
