Seoul Unveils Promotional East Sea Video in 5 More Languages

South Korea has unveiled additional versions of a promotional video on the East Sea in five more languages as part of its diplomatic campaign to spread the name of its eastern sea waters.

The Foreign Ministry said it posted the video in Japanese, Spanish, French, Russian and German on YouTube Wednesday, seven months after it released the Korean and English versions.

The video provides historical records and diplomatic documents that show the sea, which is known in many Western countries as the Sea of Japan, has been called the East Sea by Koreans for over two thousand years.

It gives details like the East Sea name being used as far back as 59 B.C., citing the Chronicles of the Three States, or the history of Korea’s ancient Three Kingdoms Period.

The video also shows the tombstone for King Gwanggaeto of Goguryeo, one of the three ancient Korean kingdoms, bears the name East Sea, while it also appears in 13th century Italian explorer Marco Polo’s travel map.

The ministry plans to produce the same video in more languages, including Chinese, Italian, Portuguese, Hindi and Arabic.
