Tokyo Gov. Criticized for Disregard of 1923 Korean Massacre

Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike is facing criticism again over her indifferent attitude towards the tragic slaying of thousands of Koreans in Japan's Kanto region nearly a century ago.

The Asahi Shimbun reported on Wednesday that the conservative governor refused to give her own opinion on the massacre of Koreans following the 1923 Great Kanto Earthquake, when asked about the issue during a Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly meeting held a day earlier. Koike said an assessment should be left up to historians.

In August, she was criticized by Japanese civic groups for stopping the annual practice of sending a eulogy for the Korean victims as the head of Tokyo.

According to Japanese publisher Jikkyo Shuppan, more than six-thousand Koreans in Kanto were killed by Japanese police, military and vigilantes after groundless rumors swirled that Koreans were poisoning wells and rioting in the aftermath of the deadly earthquake.
