Statue Memorializing WWII Sex Slavery Victims to be Unveiled in NY

A statue that symbolizes the victims of Japan's wartime sexual enslavement of women is set to be unveiled in the heart of New York City.

The Korean community in New York said Thursday that the "Statue of Peace," which resembles a young girl forced into sex slavery during World War Two, will be erected at the Museum of Korean American Heritage located in Manhattan.

A ceremony will be held Friday afternoon to unveil the memorial, the fourth of its kind to be placed in the United States, and the first ever to be erected on the East Coast.

A spokesman for the community said, "We are placing the statue in the museum for the purpose of reflecting on the pains of our past which cannot be erased."
