Massive Earthquake in Iran-Iraq Border Kills Over 200, Injures 1,700

More than 200 people were presumed to be dead after a massive earthquake jolted the border region between Iran and Iraq on Sunday.

According to Iranian and foreign media outlets such as the AP and AFP, a seven-point-three magnitude earthquake hit the region adjacent to Sarpol Zahab in Kermanshah Province in Iran and Halabjah, southeast of Sulaymaniyah, a city in the semiautonomous Kurdish region of northern Iraq at 9:18 p.m. Sunday local time

As of Monday afternoon, at least 207 people, mostly in Iran, were reported to have been killed while about one-thousand-700 were injured. Rescue workers were yet to reach many of the injured, raising the concern that the death toll would rise further.

An official of a regional government in Iran expected up to 50-thousand people could be left homeless.
