Japan Considering Sending Military Planes to Korea for Evacuation

Japan has indicated it may use its military airplanes and ships to evacuate its citizens from the Korean Peninsula in the event of a contingency in the region.

The Sankei Shimbun Tuesday reported that Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono told a parliamentary hearing a day earlier how the government will evacuate its nationals from Korea when it becomes impossible to use civilian planes. Kono said the Japanese government’s aircraft and ships will need to be deployed.

According to Sankei, Japan perceives that it is necessary to review the deployment of planes and ships its government and the Self-Defense Forces own. Japan needs South Korea's consent if it plans to send military aircraft to evacuate its nationals.

Kono also reportedly revealed Japan will also cooperate on noncombatant evacuation operations for other foreign residents in South Korea.
