VOA: US Calls on N. Korea to 'Cease and Roll Back' Nuke Program

The United States has called on North Korea to dismantle its nuclear weapons program as it dismissed the regime's demand to acknowledge the North as a nuclear state.

The Voice of America reported on Monday that during a phone interview, it was told by East Asian and Pacific Affairs Spokeswoman Katina Adams that it is not enough for the North to stop its program “where it is today.”

Adam's was responding to a remark made last week by Vitaly Pashin, a member of Russia's lower house of parliament, who said Pyongyang will sit for talks with Washington when its status as a nuclear state is recognized.

Adams said the U.S. does not see any signs the North “is willing or interested to engage in credible talks on denuclearization at this stage.” VOA called it an outright dismissal of the North’s conditions for its return to talks.

Adams also urged North Korea to be prepared to come to the table and ready to chart a course to "cease and roll back" its nuclear weapons program.
