S. Koreans Win German Human Rights Award for Candlelight Rallies

Germany's Friedrich Ebert Foundation has awarded its annual human rights award to South Koreans who participated in the candlelight vigils that led to the impeachment of former President Park Geun-hye.

At the award ceremony in Berlin on Tuesday, a survivor of the 2014 Sewol ferry sinking received the award on behalf of 17 million South Korean citizens who took to the streets for months for peaceful rallies against Park last year.

Chairman Kurt Beck said that the foundation is granting the award to the South Koreans in recognition of their contribution to promoting human rights through their peaceful rallies.

Associated with Germany's Social Democratic Party, the Friedrich Ebert Foundation has honored individuals and groups promoting human rights since 1994.
