Russian Deputy Minister: N. Korea Wants Direct Talks with US

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov says North Korea wants direct dialogue with the U.S., not security guarantees from Russia or China.

According to Russia’s Ria Novosti news agency, Morgulov made the remark during an international forum on foreign policies in Berlin on Tuesday.

He emphasized the necessity of dialogue among concerned parties over the North’s nuclear program, arguing none of the relevant countries currently trust each other.

He said communication channels should be established and Washington and Pyongyang should start talking with each other.

Asked whether North Korean leader Kim Jong-un is willing to accept any proposal for talks from the U.S., the Russian official said Kim is ready for such talks, bilateral or any other form.

He speculated the North’s continuous provocations are aimed at raising the stakes for future negotiations on its nuclear program.
