UN Political Chief Meets N. Korean Foreign Minister on 4-day Trip

The United Nations' political chief met North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong-ho on Thursday, during a rare four-day visit to the reclusive state.
According to Associated Press on Thursday, the UN Undersecretary General for Political Affairs Jeffrey Feltman held talks with Ri at the Mansudae Assembly Hall in Pyongyang.

The Mansudae Assembly Hall hosts the regime's parliamentary meetings in addition to various state events and meetings between foreign visitors and North Korean officials.

While the details of the talk were not confirmed, Feltman on Wednesday had discussed matters "related to common areas of interest concerning North Korea and UN agencies," with vice foreign minister Pak Myong-guk, according to the Korean Central News Agency.

Earlier this week, a UN spokesman said that Feltman's trip was arranged upon the invitation of the North Korean government to discuss "issues of mutual interest and concern."

On Wednesday, Feltman met with the Russian ambassador to North Korea Alexander Matsegora, according to the Russian embassy's website.

The two officials are said to have discussed Russian involvement in humanitarian programs in the North as well as assess the current situation on the Korean peninsula.

The two are said to have agreed on the need for a peaceful resolution to the crisis and called for a swift resumption of the six-way nuclear talks.
