US: No Negotiation on Nuclear State Recognition

The U.S. State Department has said there will never be negotiations with North Korea regarding recognition as a nuclear state.
In a Tuesday press briefing, department spokesman Heather Nauert said that the U.S. policy is very clear and it believes in the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. She said the U.S. is not changing its view or going to backtrack on this.
She was responding to a reporter who said that North Korea will reportedly negotiate with the U.S. if Washington recognizes the North as a nuclear state.
Nauert said the U.S. will certainly not, adding that denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is the top priority of the U.S.
She said the U.S. remains open to talks if North Korea is serious about denuclearization.
But she said that activities the North has been engaged in recently have shown they are not interested and they are not serious about sitting down and having conversations.
