'IOC Chief Seeks Trip to N. Korea'

The chief of the International Olympic Committee(IOC) is reportedly seeking a trip to North Korea to discuss the North’s participation in the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games.

Seoul officials said on Friday that discussions are under way to arrange IOC President Thomas Bach's visit to Pyongyang, adding the trip may come within this month at the earliest.

The IOC chief's trip is reportedly being arranged through discussions with the South Korean government.

A Seoul official said, however, that it's uncertain whether the North would accept Bach's visit, adding if realized, it could be seen as a positive sign of the North's participation in the Winter Olympics. One government source said that an IOC official who is of lower rank than Bach could make the visit.

There is a possibility that North Korea could allow Bach's visit when considering that it recently accepted a senior UN official's trip days after the launch of its Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile.
