NPR: US Army to Train More Soldiers for Tunnel Warfare

The U.S. Army is reportedly training thousands more soldiers in tunnel warfare, as part of an effort to be ready to offer President Donald Trump military options for North Korea.

U.S. public radio network NPR reported on Tuesday that the Army usually trains one or two brigades in tunnel warfare to prepare soldiers to fight in places like Afghanistan, but with the threat posed by North Korea, it is training additional brigades.

NPR quoted U.S. officials as saying that the additional Army brigades that will take part in the training this year include the 101st Airborne Division and the 82nd Airborne Division.

The training will reportedly take place throughout this year, most likely at home stations, although there are additional training facilities around the country that include abandoned tunnels and bunkers.

The officials said that along with training thousands more troops, the Pentagon is buying more specialized gear needed for tunnel operations: radios and night vision goggles, along with acetylene torches and bolt cutters.

NPR said that last month U.S. soldiers from the Army's 5th Cavalry Regiment trained to infiltrate a bunker at a semi-abandoned base north of Seoul and the soldiers used specialized radios and night vision goggles as they crept into the 800-meter-long tunnel.
