Sankei: Abe Decides Not to Attend PyeongChang Olympics

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has reportedly decided not to attend the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, given South Korea’s reversal of its position on the 2015 deal on Japan's wartime sexual slavery.

Quoting multiple Japanese government officials, Japan's Sankei Shimbun daily reported on Thursday that Tokyo is citing the fact that the Japanese parliament's budget deliberation coincides with the Olympics, but the decision to skip the Olympics was apparently affected by the Seoul government's recent stance on the deal.

However, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga downplayed the Sankei report, saying nothing has been decided.

South Korea on Tuesday released measures on the "flawed" deal, calling for Japan's voluntary efforts to restore the victims' honor and dignity.

On Wednesday, President Moon Jae-in also urged Japan to offer a sincere apology to the victims during a nationally televised news conference.

During a trip to Japan last month, South Korean Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha conveyed Moon's invitation extended to Abe for the opening ceremony of the games.
