Pence: US Expresses Support for Allies with Delegation to PyeongChang

U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, who will lead a U.S. delegation to the PyeongChang Winter Olympics in South Korea, says Washington is sending the delegation to express its support for its allies in Northeast Asia.

In an interview with Fox News on Wednesday, Pence said the U.S. is sending the delegation first to cheer for the U.S. athletes, but it also wants to make it clear that the country stands with its regional allies, including South Korea.

He said the U.S. is resolute to put maximum economic and diplomatic pressure on North Korea until it abandons its nuclear and ballistic missile programs, and that is another “underlying message” of the U.S. delegation's participation.

Fox News reports that Pence will meet with the leaders of South Korea and Japan during his visit to the region.
