South Korea’s Foreign Ministry says Seoul will try not to violate UN resolutions on North Korea with its support for North Korea’s participation in the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
Foreign Ministry Spokesman Noh Kyu-duk relayed the stance in a regular media briefing Thursday, addressing a question on whether the South’s financial coverage of the travel and accommodation expenses for the North Korean delegation would constitute a violation of UN Security Council resolutions.
Noh said the government will closely discuss with the international community, including the UN, to make sure it doesn't breach the resolutions.
The spokesman was also asked whether the Foreign Ministers of South Korea and Japan could sit down for a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the “Vancouver Group” foreign ministers’ meeting to be held next Tuesday in Canada. He said there's a possibility “necessary schedules” could be coordinated.
If confirmed, the meeting would likely focus on the controversial Seoul-Tokyo deal on Japan’s wartime sexual slavery as well as the possibility of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe visiting the PyeongChang Winter Olympics.
The Vancouver Group meeting brings together countries that fought against North Korea or assisted the allied forces during the Korean War. Japan, India and Sweden have also been invited to the meeting.
