Tillerson to Attend N. Korea Talks in Canada

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson will attend a meeting of foreign ministers from 20 countries in Canada next week to discuss diplomatic efforts on the Korean Peninsula.

U.S. State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement on Thursday that the meeting will bring together nations from across the globe to demonstrate international solidarity against North Korea's dangerous and illegal nuclear and ballistic missile programs.

The department said that Canada is hosting the Vancouver Foreign Ministers' Meeting on Security and Stability on the Korean Peninsula from Monday through Wednesday.

It added that U.S. Defense Secretary James Mattis will participate in the meeting's welcome dinner on Monday.

South Korea's Foreign Minister Kang Kyung-wha is expected to hold separate bilateral talks with Tillerson on Monday.

The countries invited to send representatives to Vancouver are the so-called "Sending Powers," which are those that contributed troops or aid to the UN war effort in 1950s Korea. As such, North Korea's traditional allies China and Russia are not invited.
