Xi Hopes Winter Olympics Marks Start of Improved Situation on Peninsula

Chinese President Xi Jinping has expressed hope that the PyeongChang Olympics will not only lead to opportunities for inter-Korean dialogue but also to improving the state of affairs on the Korean Peninsula.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry revealed on its Web site on Friday that Xi made the remark during his telephone conversation with President Moon Jae-in held on Thursday.

According to the ministry, Xi told Moon that currently challenges and opportunities coexist on the Korean Peninsula. He said China will boost communication with South Korea and other related countries for the state of affairs on the peninsula to improve.

Xi also said that he was content with the advancement in Seoul-Beijing ties, adding that this year China will work with South Korea toward strengthening strategic communication and appropriately tackling sensitive issues as well as toward peace and stability in the region.

Xi added that his country continuously supports the two Koreas’ efforts toward improving ties and resolving peninsula issues through dialogue and exchanges.

The ministry said that in response, Moon expressed gratitude for China’s support toward the Olympics and said he is looking forward to progress in Seoul and Beijing’s strategic partnership.
