US Emphasizes Simultaneous Advance in Inter-Korean Ties, Denuclearization

Washington says that it will cooperate with Seoul on improving inter-Korean ties as long as it helps North Korea abandon its nuclear weapons program.

Responding to a request to comment on Pyongyang’s invitation for President Moon Jae-in to visit the North, Michael Cavey, spokesman for the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs at the U.S. State Department, emphasized Sunday that the two allies will work together through the maximum pressure campaign to ensure progress in inter-Korean relations will be accompanied by advances toward denuclearization.

Cavey said although the U.S. supports Moon’s call for dialogue between the U.S. and the North, the dialogue should touch on the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

Cavey also said the U.S. and the South are “in close contact” to form a unified response to the North, including the need to maintain pressure to achieve a denuclearized Korean Peninsula.

He declined to reveal Washington’s stance on a possible inter-Korean summit and the possibility that the rapid improvement in relations between the two Koreas will lead to the weakening of international sanctions on the North.
