White House: US Willing to Engage N. Korea

The White House says the U.S. is willing to engage North Korea to make it clear that the complete and verifiable denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula is non-negotiable.

A White House National Security Council(NSC) spokesperson said in emailed comments to Yonhap News on Tuesday that the U.S.' "maximum pressure campaign" will intensify until the North Korean regime denuclearizes.

The remark appears to be in line with U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, who said on his flight home from a trip to the PyeongChang Olympics that the maximum pressure campaign is going to continue unless the North takes steps towards its denuclearization but if the North wants to talk, the U.S. will.

The remarks hint that the U.S. may engage in talks with North Korea without preconditions if necessary, while continuing its pressure and sanctions.
The NSC official also said that Seoul and Washington are in close contact about their unified response to North Korea, including the need to maintain maximum pressure to achieve a denuclearized Korean Peninsula.
