FAO Again Names N. Korea as Country Short of Food

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization(FAO) has again designated North Korea as a country facing food shortages this year.

Radio Free Asia reports that according to the agency's Crop Prospects and Food Situation report for this year's first quarter released Monday, North Korea was among 37 nations requiring external assistance for food.

The U.S. international broadcaster cited "reduced agricultural output and economic downturn" for North Korea saying the 2017 main crop season is estimated to have decreased from the previous year due to water deficits.

It said that as a result, most households are anticipated to continue to experience borderline or poor food consumption rates.

The FAO estimated that some 460-thousand tons of food need to be imported or covered by humanitarian assistance from the international community.

The UN agency mentioned North Korea's vulnerability to natural disasters such as floods and drought and its lack of fertilizer and farm equipment as the main reasons for failing to cope with its chronic food shortage.
