SCMP: N. Korean Leader May Send His Sister as Special Envoy to US

The South China Morning Post says Pyongyang may propose sending North Korean leader Kim Jong-un’s sister to the U.S. to arrange direct talks between the two countries.

Quoting a South Korean diplomatic source, the Hong Kong-based daily reported Thursday that a proposal to send Kim Yo-jong as a special envoy to the U.S. could be one of the messages the North will deliver to Washington through the South Korean delegation this week.

Two of President Moon Jae-in’s special envoys who visited Pyongyang and met North Korean leader Kim Jong-un earlier this week, including the head of the presidential National Security Office Chung Eui-yong, are scheduled to meet with US National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster to update Washington on their meeting with Kim.

The source told the paper that Chung will deliver “conditions from the North Korean side to start some bilateral dialogue with the United States.”

The source said Kim may send his sister to Washington as he did to South Korea for the PyeongChang Winter Olympics, adding “she is the most powerful weapon of North Korea now.”
