Trump Says No Libya Model for N. Korea

U.S. President Donald Trump says he is not pursuing the so-called Libya model for dismantling North Korea's nuclear weapons and would offer strong security guarantees in return for denuclearization.

Trump made the remarks on Thursday during a meeting with NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg at the White House.

When asked about his security adviser John Bolton’s calls for the Libya model of denuclearization first, compensation second, Trump said that it’s not a model that the U.S. has at all.

He also said that if the North reaches an agreement on its denuclearization during the planned talks, the U.S. will guarantee North Korean leader Kim Jong-un will stay in power.

Trump said that Kim would be running his country and his country would be very rich, adding he will be very happy.

However, Trump warned that if the talks fail, Kim could suffer the same fate as Libya's Muammar Gaddafi, who was overthrown by rebels and gruesomely killed.

He said that the fate suffered by Libya shows what will take place if a deal is not made.

The remarks came two days after North Korea abruptly canceled inter-Korean talks and threatened to pull out of the planned summit with the U.S. citing the Max Thunder air drills between Seoul and Washington.
