The Japanese Foreign Ministry has removed from its Web site a passage about South Korea that said the two countries "share basic values of freedom, democracy and market economy.”
As of Wednesday morning, the Japanese version of the Web site now just describes South Korea as a most important neighbor.
While reporting that the foreign ministry changed the description on Monday, the Japanese daily Asahi Shimbun quoted a ministry official as saying the revision was aimed at using a more frequently used expression but the newspaper said it appears to reflect a change in how Tokyo views Seoul.
The Asahi report also cited Japanese government officials as expressing distrust in Korean society and its judiciary.
