Putin: N. Korea Had Atomic Bomb in 2001

Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il had personally told him back in 2001 that Pyongyang has nuclear weapons. That’s much earlier than February 2005 when the North officially declared nuclear weapons status.
According to Russian news agencies Tass and Ria Novosti, Putin made the remark at a plenary session of the first Russian Energy Week(REW) Energy Efficiency and Energy Development International Forum in Moscow.
Putin said that in 2001, he stopped by North Korea on his way to Japan and met with Kim Jong-il, the father of the North’s current leader. Putin said that at the time, Kim told him that the North has an atomic bomb with which it could destroy Seoul.
Putin said that now in 2017, the North, though it is subject to continuous sanctions, has a hydrogen bomb. He also noted that Pyongyang has a missile with a range of 27-hundred kilometers as well as a missile with a range of five-thousand kilometers.
Putin said all related countries must ease their rhetoric on the North, stressing the need for direct dialogue between the North and the U.S. and between the North and other countries in the region. He claimed that such a process is the only way to find a balanced and acceptable solution to the North’s nuclear issue.
